Understanding UV Protection

Damages of UV rays include:
  • Stimulate melanin formation: Freckles and pigmentation
  • Accelerate aging process: sags, dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun Burn: reddened skin, peeling and increased chance of skin cancer

Sun Protection Misunderstandings:

1. The highest the SPF, the better for skin!

To choose suitable sun protection product, you need to consider the length of exposure and the amount of UV rays. SPF 50 is required if exposed directly under sunlight. However, too high SPF indicates more and more sun protection ingredients that may induce pore blockage or irritation.

2. Physical sunscreen VS chemical sunblock:

Physical sunscreen like titanium oxides or zinc oxides reflects the UV rays, irritation would be minimized and suitable for sensitive skin. But large particles may not reflect every UV rays for full protection.

Chemical sunblock use organic absorber to absorb UV rays and invalid the damage of UV. Although a mixture of chemicals may cause irritation on small population, a full blockage of a broad spectrum UV rays would be achieved.

Fine physical sunscreen powders or those with physical sunscreen ingredient with little amount of chemical sunblock would reduce irritation but full protection.

3. Apply SPF 130 still burnt by sun?

One application in the morning would not be enough for whole day protection, sun protection ingredient would be dissolved by sweating or oil secretion, you must reapply between intervals. Chemical sunblock would be effective after 20 minutes, so pre-application before sun exposure.

4. Sun protection ingredients in my moisturizer would be enough!

Even there is protection ingredient, the amount contains is unspecified, that may not be enough for bare exposure under strong UV rays. Sport especially swimming, waterproof sun protection would be more appropriate.

5. No need to apply sunscreen under shelter

UV rays reflected everywhere even indoors area. SPF 15 or above sunscreen provide basic protection for indoors condition. Of course, reapplication between intervals would make sure perfect protections.

6. How to reapply sunscreen lotion or cream over makeup?

Sun protection product is not only in liquid form, they could also be found in powder form. Loose powder, cake foundation or press powder contains sunscreen too! Reapply while touch up in mid-day.

7. How to wash sun protection products?

High SPF products could only be wash thoroughly with makeup remover. Sunblock would be dissolved by cleansing oil or cleansing cream, then followed with normal cleanser. Only normal cleanser cannot fully dissolve all the sun protection products. Sunblock may block pores and cause irritation without thorough cleansing.
