About “Ladies' Purse Day” Organized by The Hong Kong Jockey Club
First run in 1863, Ladies' Purse Day commenced 21 years earlier than the year when the HKJC was founded. It is one of the oldest and most popular race meetings in Hong Kong. More than a century ago, ladies attending the Ladies' Purse Day would dress up in splendid attire. According to tradition, the owner, trainer and jockey of the winning horse of the Ladies' Purse race were awarded gold coins by a renowned lady attending the event, who will present a handbag with 21 gold coins to the winning jockey.
